OUR STORY

Disrupting institutional and societal norms to cultivate cycles of transformational change and address sociocultural barriers through the power of community.

WHY OYA IN OYANOVA MATTERS

WE ARE A CATALYST FOR CHANGE.
What are Communities of Transformation?

They are groups of people, like Oyanova, who work together to create, foster, and innovate positive and dynamic shifts in their own lives and the lives of the community around them and beyond — all through the power of community. These proactive groups are deeply ingrained within their own communities — and are forces for good aimed at leading their communities through positive and impactful transformations toward a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable socio and environmental ecosystem for all.

Animated depiction of transformation and new beginnings

Our name Oyanova draws inspiration from Oya, the fierce protector of women, a goddess of change and transformation in Yoruban mythology. Oya embodies the power of rebirth, justice, and disruption — qualities that are integral to our mission.

Abstract representation of change and empowerment

Just as the ring of our logo symbolizes the cycle of endings and new beginnings, Oya represents the unstoppable force of change that Oyanova seeks to bring to our communities and the world. She is a warrior, a nurturer, and a boundary-breaker, guiding us in our commitment to transformation.

Oya’s power brings about necessary change, often through fierce and rapid means, Oyanova is committed to catalyzing the seismic shifts needed to break down systemic barriers and create new opportunities for Black and Brown communities. We channel Oya’s energy to protect, uplift, and empower, ensuring that our work resonates with the same strength and purpose.

OUR PURPOSE

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES, BUILDING GENERATIONAL WEALTH

We are committed to the generational wealth-building, financial stability, and improved mental health and overall well-being of Black and Brown communities. Driven by our belief in the theory of change, our community of transformation will achieve our mission through the development of infrastructures that foster, celebrate, and amplify community capacity to thrive. Our purpose is to create seismic cultural shifts that empower our communities from within, challenging the status quo and driving meaningful change.

OYANOVA: CULTIVATING JUSTICE, INSPIRING CHANGE

Oyanova stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for Black and Brown communities. We are a dynamic force committed to forging innovative social initiatives through the power of community, and our mission is to cultivate a holistic ecosystem that addresses the multifaceted needs of our communities. By emphasizing competent care, culture, education, growth, and liberation, we envision a future where Black and Brown individuals lead transformative shifts in systemic power dynamics, guiding society toward intersectional justice and equity.

What are sociocultural barriers?

These are individual or collective attitudes and beliefs that impact a person’s ability to stay healthy and engage in mental and physical healthcare and well-being. They can include issues or concerns related to a lack of culturally competent care, barriers within social support systems, education, accessibility, and sociocultural beliefs that create hesitancy within Black and Brown communities — all impacting their ability to stay healthy, recognize a health need, decide to get care, or manage a health condition well in daily life.

OUR FOUNDERS

DR. JESSICA ESQUIVEL, B.SCI PHD

Blazing a Trail for AfroLatine Women in Physics

Excitement and innovation drive Dr. Jessica Esquivel in her pursuit of scientific discovery and empowering others. A lifelong fascination with science and space exploration blossomed into a passion for physics during her time at science camps and the Science Academy of South Texas. Her academic achievements are a testament to her dedication: A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from St. Mary’s University (2011) and a PhD in Physics from Syracuse University (2018) — where she became the second Black woman to graduate with such a degree.

Dr. Esquivel’s journey isn’t just about groundbreaking research. As one of only around 150 Black women with a PhD in physics in the United States, she understands the challenges of navigating spaces where she’s “the first” or “the only.” She’s a champion for diversity in STEAM, particularly at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality.

Fueled by a strong sense of self (female, Black, AfroLatine, lesbian, physicist, Texan), Dr. Esquivel uses her experiences to pave the way for others. Her doctoral research focused on utilizing machine learning to analyze neutrino interactions in the MicroBooNE experiment. Now, as an Associate Scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, she’s part of the Muon g-2 experiment, pushing the boundaries of physics beyond the Standard Model.

But Dr. Esquivel’s impact goes beyond the lab. Recognized for her exceptional contributions to Fermilab’s K-12 outreach programs, she is a vocal advocate for increasing diversity in physics. Leading the U.S. Delegation to the International Conference for Women in Physics, she champions training women in science communication, empowering them to navigate the challenges of “mansplaining,” social media trolls, and the constant questioning of expertise.
