Correlation Between Poverty and Mental Illness

17.0% of Hispanic/Latinx people in the U.S. live in poverty (compared to 8.2% of non-Hispanic whites). Individuals who live in poverty have a higher risk of mental illness and, conversely, individuals with mental illness have a higher risk of living in poverty.

OUR APPROACH

We believe therapy is a collaborative journey, not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Oyanova Healing, we tailor our approach to your unique needs and goals. Our approach is rooted in a psychodynamic framework, but we also incorporate holistic practices that address the mind, body, and heart. While we center around those in historically excluded populations, we provide long term, quality care for individuals regardless of legal status, race, gender, sexuality, age.

Recognizing the limitations of traditional, Westernized psychotherapy, we challenge its rigid frameworks that have often excluded marginalized voices. At Oyanova Healing, we believe that therapy doesn’t have to happen within four sterile walls; instead, we explore and integrate diverse healing practices into the therapeutic process.

This philosophy is inspired by founder, Emily Esquivel’s and co-founder Dr. Jessica Esquivel’s experiences as Latine and Black/Latine academics navigating the ivory tower and the mental wellness challenges they overcame. We prioritize safety while fostering an environment where healing is personal, inclusive, and transcends conventional boundaries.

LGBTQIA+ High Schoolers Suicide Rates

LGBTQ+ high schoolers of color are also more likely to attempt suicide (27%) compared to LGBTQ+ high schoolers (22%) and non-LGBTQ+ high schoolers (5%) in the United States.

WHY CHOOSE OYANOVA HEALING?

At Oyanova Healing, we are deeply committed to providing culturally sensitive care tailored to the unique challenges faced by BIPOC communities. Our holistic approach recognizes the intricate connection between mind, body, and heart, empowering you to develop the resilience needed for lasting change.

We understand firsthand the systemic barriers and stigma surrounding mental health in our communities. We not only support clients but also advocate for the well-being of BIPOC clinicians, ensuring they receive the therapy and support they need. At Oyanova Healing, we work collaboratively to uncover and integrate unconscious barriers, helping you achieve true freedom and become the best version of yourself.

Stigmas Prevent Care

Despite the needs, only one in three Black adults with mental illness receive treatment.

Unequal Rates of Diagnoses Among LGBTQIA+ Adults of Color

While LGBTQ+ adults of color experience similar rates of mental health challenges as LGBTQ+ adults generally, they receive unequal rates of diagnoses. A rate of 29% of LGBTQ+ adults of color say they have been diagnosed with a depressive order from a provider, compared to 39% of the LGBTQ+ adults broadly, a ten point gap.

Mental Health Care in Black Adults

According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, Black adults in the U.S. are more likely than white adults to report persistent symptoms of emotional distress, such as sadness and feeling like everything is an effort.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What insurance do you accept?

We accept BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Oscar Health, and Oxford. If you don’t have insurance, we offer out-of-pocket rates.

What if I don’t have insurance?

That’s okay! You can pay out of pocket for each session. A reasonable rate for both client and therapist will be discussed during your free intake appointment.

How long is an intake appointment and how do I set one up?

Each intake appointment is 15 minutes long and will consist of sharing a bit about yourself and what is bringing you to therapy at this time. This is also a great time to ask your potential therapist any questions you may have.

This is my first time reaching out to a therapist, and I’m a little apprehensive. What should I expect from this process?

Rest assured; most people are nervous the first time they reach out to a therapist — and that’s okay. It’s a big step! After your intake session, you and your therapist will mutually agree to move forward with the process and set up a full first session (typically 45-60 minutes). From there you will continue to build a relationship and assess if the two of you are a good fit for one another. If you and your therapist are a good fit, you will continue to schedule weekly appointments.

What if I determine that my therapist isn’t a good fit for me?

Sometimes your first therapist isn’t the best fit for you, and that is perfectly normal. If you determine that your therapist might not be right for you, we encourage you to share that feedback so that we can help you find a better fit for you.

We understand that we can’t be a perfect match with everyone, and your care is of utmost importance to us. If we’re not a good fit, we still want you to be able to access the care you’re looking for and are happy to provide external referrals to help make your transition to a different therapist who may be a better fit as smoothly as possible.
